Meet Mark Borg
Mark Borg is a Maltese goldsmith, silversmith and filigree artist whose work bridges traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art. His journey into filigree began at the age of 13, when he attended his first filigree course and discovered a craft that would become a lifelong passion.
Working from Malta, Mark creates both traditional and contemporary pieces, from intricate jewellery to sculptural and kinetic works. His practice is driven by a desire to explore what filigree can become when its traditional techniques are combined with contemporary ideas, materials and technology.
Mark’s work often begins with familiar subjects, forms or elements of Maltese heritage and transforms them through the delicate language of filigree. Alongside precious metals, he experiments with materials such as brass, steel and upcycled metals, as well as 3D printing, stone setting and mechanical movement.
This approach allows him to preserve the precision and craftsmanship of traditional Maltese filigree while pushing its boundaries beyond conventional jewellery and into contemporary sculpture and fine art.
His work has received national recognition and has been exhibited internationally, including representation of Malta at Expo 2025 in Japan with his semi-abstract sculpture Luzzu. He has also collaborated with fashion designer Luke Azzopardi on The Bloom of Tradition: Filigree Reimagined, with their work subsequently presented internationally, including at Paris Couture Week.
